2019 VMAC Cross Country Champs

WCA’s Cross Country program is in its third year going into the fall of 2020. The program started under Athletic Director and Coach, Pam Gibbons, because of her great memories of being a runner back in high school and her eye for some raw talent in the school! Svetlana Goncharova and Cameron DeLagarza were the lone 2 runners of the first ever Cross Country team in 2019. Svetlana has since gone on to be quite the influential runner in the Williamsburg community and beyond winning several honors for first place finishes amongst females and her age group across numerous local races. She joined the Colonial Road Runners of Williamsburg and has been running with them during her time back at home between classes at Old Dominion University. WCA hopes to have her back to help coach one day!

Since 2019, the team grew to 8 total runners who took the VMAC conference by storm edging out Grace Christian School by one point to win the 2020 Conference Title. Amazing runs and top 10 finishes by our boys Jack Marlowe (2nd place), Jacob Thibeault (3rd place), Julian LaPastora (4th place), Cillian Clapp (7th place), and Joe Dill (10th place) catapulted the Eagles into Conference champs contenders.

Coach Gibbons loves the prospect of running for both the team and individual growth aspects of the sport. The runners learn the value of doing something collectively and personally while cultivating their Christian character through traits of perseverance, responsibility, courage, cooperation, self-discipline, and sportsmanship.

Cross Country is a co-ed program offering both JV and Varsity opportunities based on numbers; however, 5th grade athletes may also join, train, and compete with the team as exhibition runners in certain race events based on coach recommendation.
