WCA Lady Eagle Basketball Fights off Late Surge from Atlantic Shores, Edged out by Norfolk Christian on the Road

In a game that had the look of a blowout, a determined Atlantic Shores Christian Girl’s team made a push to knock off our #1 ranked Lady Eagle basketball team, which fortunately came up short. Shores, which recently drew a #4 ranking in the Coaches poll for VISAA Division 2 fell behind early 34-17 in the first half as a result of strong games and dominant rebounding by senior Nissa Chillers, who would end the game with a game high 27 points and 8 rebounds, and Aquazia Jones, who contributed 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. After building a 22 point lead in the 3rd, the Lady Eagles relaxed…but perhaps too much, as Shores went on a torrid run, cutting the lead to 9 with about three to play. The team stepped up its defense in the closing minutes, however, to notch a quality 66-54 win.

The Lady Eagles next contest was versus Norfolk Christian, a team that our squad beat soundly by almost 20 points at the beginning of the season. The same team that scored that victory, however, was not on the court for this one, and Norfolk Christian play was much improved, which has allowed them to climb to the #8 ranking in Division 2. Despite jumping out to 21-13 lead at the half, the Lady Eagles once again relaxed a little too much, allowing NCS to climb back into the game. Ultimately WCA would lose in a tight one, 60-59.

The Lady Eagles will attempt to rebound against Broadwater Academy in Exmore Tuesday  before hosting VISAA Divsion 2 #9 ranked Isle of Wight Academy this Friday.
