Boy’s Basketball Wraps Season, Upset by Eventual State Champion Virginia Academy

The Boys basketball team took a #1 seed into VISAA Divison 3 Semi-Finals, but ran into a buzz saw in #5 ranked and eventual State Champion Virginia Academy.

Having just downed higher ranked Fredericksburg Academy in the Quarterfinals, Virginia Academy came into this game on a strong end of season roll. With two players over 6’10”, Coach Chris Brown knew he had his hands full, but was hopeful that the Eagles staunch defense and strong shooting would make up for their inability to easily drive the lane.

What WCA (29-6) hadn’t planned on was a five-straight 3 point field goal spurt by guardĀ Taudas Nausedas, who spurred a 19-9 third quarter surge to help VA take the lead and never look back. WCA did manage to trim the lead to four several times in the last minute with the ball in hand, but couldn’t close the gap any more.

WCA wasn’t the only team to fall victim to the resurgent Patriots, however, as they claimed the state title the very next day with a 3 point victory over Amelia Academy.

The team’s playoff loss certainly doesn’t overshadow what was one of the most successful seasons in WCA history, with multiple wins over top notch competition in the state.
