WCA Eagle Swim Team Scores High at Trinity Episcopal JV Candy Cane Invitational Swim Meet

Now in its second year under former William and Mary Head Coach Anne Anderson, the Williamsburg Christian Academy Eagle Swim team continues to grow and improve, and showed some of that improvement in Saturday’s JV Candy cane Invitational at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Chesterfield, VA. The event, sponsored by Trinity Episcopal School in Richmond, gives underclassmen and those ineligible for Varsity meets a chance to swim events in a competitive environment.  For WCA, the need to participate in this meet was the age of the teammembers, who consist of only one upperclassman, and the lack of competition in the Metro athletic conference to which they belong. There are currently no swim programs in any of the other Metro Conference schools at this time.

This may pose a problem soon, though, as several of WCA’s strongest underclassmen performers are at or approaching VISAA State Championship qualifying levels. The team is starting to look into varsity invitationals for next season, especially after their performances Saturday. The girls team, which numbers only 5 swimmers, was able to leap frog three other teams to place 6th, including a very large St. Catherine’s School team, which numbered almost three times the WCA contingent.

Kaitlyn Sullivan led all WCA scorers,  taking first place overall in the 200 Freestyle and 2nd in the 100 Free, both new school records. Delaney Gibbons swam a great come from behind 50 backstroke race to take 2nd in that event (also a school record) and also posted a 6th place in the 100 Individual Medley. Lainey Flanagan was a big scorer as well, grabbing 3rd in the 100 IM and 4th in 100 Freestyle. Mary Nice was 6th in the 50 Breaststroke (new school record) and also scored points with a 14th in the 50 Freestyle. Cheyenne Silverio also notched best times in all her events.

On the Boys side, Aaron Copland scored with a 8th place finish in the 50 Free, and 10th in the 100 Free. 5th Grader Nathan Watson also scored points in the 50 Backstroke, and 5th grader Connor Sullivan set a new school record in the 50 Breaststroke.

The 200 Medley and Freestyle relay teams of Gibbons, Nice, Sullivan and Flanagan also placed 3rd in each event.

Both of Sullivan’s event times qualified her for VISAA state championships in February, and the medley relay combination above also was a qualifying time for VISAA States, although the group will not be able to compete as two of the swimmers are ineligible for varsity competition due to grade year.

Great job to all our Eagle swimmers!
