WCA Boys’ Varsity Soccer Extends Undefeated Streak With Wins Over Stonebridge and Hampton Christian

Athletes from both WCA and Stonebridge gather to pray following their game last week

In a pleasant surprise to start the season, the boys’ varsity soccer team three games into the season finds themselves atop the Metro standings with an unblemished 3-0 record. Having won their opening game after recovering from a 3-1 deficit and rallying to win 4-3, WCA dispatched Stonebridge School of Chesapeake, VA seven goals to none. With a 2-0 undefeated record, WCA traveled to Hampton for their first away game versus Hampton Christian Academy.

After jockeying field position for the first ten minutes of the game, Cle’ Greene broke away from the pack and dribbled down the center of the 18 yard box, muscling his way past a defender and slipping it by the HCA goalie to start the ball rolling for the Eagles.

In the 21st minute, on an assist from Robert Carter via a tremendous downfield punt, Cle’ Greene adroitly sidestepped a defender, causing the goalie and his counterpart to collide into each other, and danced the ball across the goal line for another score.
In the 26th minute, Hampton Christian decided to make it interesting with an intelligent shot over the goalie’s head which caught him outside the six-yard box, closing the gap to one goal, 2-1.
Jalen Vaughan closed the door on the scoring, as well as the Warriors of Hampton Christian, by converting a penalty kick in the 32nd minute of the first half to end the scoring at 3 to 1.
The Eagles were paced well with the exceptional play of Peter Rodenberg and the Cook twins, RaShawn and DaShawn. Newcomer Luka Alberts solidified the back line defense and the stellar defensive play of Jordan Pearson and Evan Henley, as well as Jahvon Noray, kept the Eagles above water, fending off several HCA advances into WCA territory.
The Eagles will next face rival Atlantic Shores Christian, who defeated the same Hampton Christian squad 5-1, but has since reeled off 4 straight blowout losses against high-level competition.  A victory in that contest would certainly put WCA in the driver’s seat for a potential Metro crown this season. The game will be at home and will start at 4:30. We hope that all of our WCA community will come out and support our team as they contend to stay undefeated and establish their place atop the Metro standings!
