WCA Eagle Swimmer Sullivan Qualifies for Virginia State Team, Headed to Eastern Zone Championships

Many students’ summers are a period of relaxation, fun camps, and kicking back. Kaitlyn Sullivan’s summer has been filled with 2 hour a day swim practices, and swim meets every other weekend in an attempt to improve and reach one of her primary goals this year: to make the Eastern Zone Swimming Championships as a member of the Virginia State Team in the 11-12 year old girls division.

Sullivan was part of Williamsburg Christian Academy’s inaugural season swim team this past year, and helped the team off to a great start in JV competition. When she is not honing her skills with Eagle Swim under Coach Anne Anderson, she is a member of the USA Swimming year round swim club, 757Swim. This past Spring, she was able to achieve all possible state short course (25 yard pool length) qualifying times available in swimming’s five competitive events: Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Freestyle and the combination of all the four strokes, the Individual Medley. But due to a scheduling conflict that would make her unable to attend the Virginia Age Group Long Course (50 meter pool length) State Championships this summer, she was forced to set her sights higher, with an all-or-nothing bid for the ‘Zones’ Team.

Qualification for the team requires meeting at least four qualifying times or ‘cuts’ that are more stringent than the Virginia State Championship qualifying times. Last weekend, she entered the Summer Madness meet at Newport News’ Brittingham Aquatic Facility with two of the required cuts, and powered through to collect another four cuts in nine events swum to secure her position on the State Team.

Sullivan will travel to East Meadow, NY with the team the first week in August to compete in the Eastern Zone Championships. We ask the entire Williamsburg Christian Academy Community to pray for a great meet for her…swim fast Kaitlyn!
