The WCA Eagle Basketball team has had itself a busy, and successful, Christmas break. The team had entered break having lost two of three games after a solid win over rival Atlantic Shores, both coming either by one point or overtime, and entered their tournament season with a 7-3 record.
The Eagles continued their gut wrenching loss streak again in their first game in the Atlantic Shores Christmas tournament, as the team once again lost a game by a single point to Woodside High School out of Newport News, 68-67. Foul trouble would doom the WCA in this one as both Chester Makoi and RaShawn Cook both fouled out of the game. Team Captain Cle’von Greene kept the action close, though, with yet another double double performance of 32 points and 10 rebounds.
From that point, however, the Eagles got back to winning ways. The followup game to the loss to Woodside was a substantial victory by the score of 81-66 over Life Christian Academy. The game was a rematch of a buzzer beater victory earlier this year at home, but Life Christian could not contain big man Chester Makoi in this one, as Makoi tallied 24 points and 13 rebounds. Greene added to his double double streak with 29 points and 11 rebounds.
The following week featured WCA in a big venue tournament at the Hampton Coliseum as they participated in the Crossover Christmas Showcase presided over by NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson. The Eagles brought their game to an all new level in the tournament. The tourney started with an easy 77-42 win over VHSL squad Ocean Lakes from Division 6A, the public high school’s largest schools division.
The highlight of the games during the break, though, was certainly the second contest of the tourney against the formidable Hampton High School Crabbers. Undefeated until a recent loss to Cape Henry Collegiate, Hampton was recently calculated to be the #4 team in the state of Virginia by MaxPreps. Although it was a solid team effort for the win, Captain Cle’von Greene was nearly unstoppable, as he tallied more points in the game than Hampton scored in their entire first half. Greene would finish with 31 points and more than half the team’s rebounds with 17. He would earn honors in the tournament as the Most Valuable Player as a result of his incredible two game performance.
The Eagles travel to Richmond for their next major test against VISAA D1 Benedictine. Benedictine comes into the game with a pedestrian two wins to nine losses record, but don’t let the record fool you. The Cadets have battled some of the top talent in the region, and include 6’10” big man John Salley, as well as several players over 6’6″. Ball security and movement will be key if the Eagles plan on escaping Nichols Fieldhouse with a W.
Please plan on being in attendance at Homecoming, as the Eagles will dive back into Metro conference play against Broadwater Academy on Friday, January 6th. JV tips at 5:30PM, and the varsity will start at 7PM.
