Eagle Boys Varsity Hoops Team Charges Into New Year With Three Game Winning Streak

When last we left the Eagle Boys Varsity basketball Team, they had lost solidly to a big and strong Division 1 team in 2013 VISAA Division 1 State Champion Benedictine.

The reset seemed to spur a new sense of urgency, however. The Eagles have now won 3 consecutive games in 3 straight days of league and non-league play.

WCA started their current streak just after the snow cancelled homecoming match-up with Broadwater, as they traveled to Charlottesville to battle Division 2 St. Anne’s-Belfield. Always a touch contest at home, STAB didn’t disappoint, as the Eagles escaped with a close 63-55 win. STAB actually led this game at the half, and the Eagles needed a 14-7 fourth quarter to put the game away. Team Captain Cle’Von Greene led all scorers with 27 points. Big man Chester Makoi brought down 13 rebounds.

The following day, with news of their #1 ranking in VISAA Division 3 in the season’s first poll, the Eagles traveled down to Portsmouth for one of their few Metro conference match-ups so far this season. Alliance was no match for WCA, and the Eagles cruised to a comfortable 89-53 win. The Eagles led by 20 at the half in a game where all 5 starters scored in double digits.

‘No rest for the weary’ might be Coach Chris Brown’s slogan for this season, as the team traveled again the very next day for tournament play at Bishop Sullivan High School in Virginia Beach. The Eagles added another victory on weary legs, 77-71 over Bayside High School of Virginia Beach. The team jumped to an early lead of 11 in the first quarter, but Bayside trimmed that to 6 at the half, then kept pace the rest of the game. Cle’Von Greene led all scorers, but RaShawn Cook’s relentless drive pressure led to 12 free throw attempts and ten of his 17 points, which would be decisive in the win.

In the final leg of the marathon 4 game set, WCA will play well-regarded if inconsistent Granby High of Norfolk on Martin Luther King day. Stay tuned to next week’s Eaglegram for the wrap on that contest.
