Eagle Hoops Takes Critical Matchup Against Atlantic Shores, Drops Rematch With Amelia Academy

Williamsburg Christian Academy was able to take a huge step in securing another regular season Metro Conference Crown last week with a pivotal win against Division 2 Rival Atlantic Shores Christian School. Never and easy place to try and win, the VISAA Division 2 eighth ranked Seahawks played fiercely throughout at home.

Once again the story of the game was the play of Captain Cle’von Greene, who exploded for 35 points, with 57% shooting from the field and sunk 9 of 10 shots from the line. DaShawn Cook was 2nd in scoring with 17 points, while brother RaShawn collected 12 to go with 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

The win over Atlantic Shores puts the Eagles at 8-0 in Metro play in advance of their Homecoming match up on Monday, February 6th at 7PM versus Hampton Christian School, one of the few remaining teams who could reasonably challenge for the Metro crown at this point.

The vigorous pace and intensity of the Atlantic Shores game seemed to stalk WCA the very next night, however, as they sought to avenge an earlier season loss to Amelia Academy. At the time of the game, the VISAA D3 poll had WCA tied for #1 in the State, while Amelia was ranked third. The Eagles were haunted by mental lapses in ball security and defense, and Amelia took full advantage. WCA came out strong in the first quarter 17-10 but was hit with a number of quick fouls, and was outscored 23-13 in the second quarter giving Amelia a three point lead at the half.

Amelia came out firing again in the second half, jumping out to a double digit lead before WCA closed the gap to a tied score at the end of the third quarter. But Amelia capitalized on missed free throws by the Eagles and quick fast break buckets in the 4th, to win going away 69-66.

Due to Amelia’s close 3rd place position in the VISAA standings, the loss may very well drop WCA to 3rd in the Division heading into the final month of VISAA play. It is very likely this is not the last we have seen of Amelia Academy, and could very well face off against them in the VISAA D3 Playoffs.

WCA faces Hampton Christian School tonight at 7PM, following a Homecoming slate which includes the JJV girls at 4 and the JV versus Hampton Christian at 5:30. Homecoming court will be named at 6:30PM prior to the game.
