WCA Eagle Hoops Roundup: Challenging Week for Boys Team Yields 2-2 Mark

If there’s one thing that can be said about Head Basketball Coach Chris Brown’s scheduling, it’s that he definitely wasn’t afraid of playing anyone in the State this season…in division or not.

Our WCA Eagle Men’s Basketball Team had certainly its most challenging week of basketball of the season this past week, as it faced off against the #2 ranked team in all of Virginia, as well as VISAA Division 3 #10 ranked Alliance Christian, and a solid Division 2 St. Anne’s-Belfield team on the road, finishing with Hampton Christian last night, coming out of the week with a win and two losses.

The Eagles opened the week against a team some would say may be the best in the state with the exception of basketball factory Oak Hill Academy. Led by two Division 1 commits, including a 6’11” swing forward heading to basketball powerhouse Kentucky next year, Virginia Episcopal presented a fantastic challenge to our Eagle team, and the team responded, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead. VES would go on a scoring torrent in the second quarter, however, expanding their lead to near twenty points. Our Eagles, led by Junior Cle’Von Greene’s 26 points and senior Xavier Green’s 12 points and 10 rebounds, managed to close the gap admirably several times to as little as seven, but after Green fouled out with a minute to go, VES added a group of free throws to take the win at home 91-80. WCA will get another stab at VES at home February 15th in what should be a great rematch.

The team bounced back nicely however with a runaway win over VISAA D3 #10 Alliance Christian at home last Friday night 95-60. Mike Duncan scored 20 points and added 8 rebounds, while Cle’Vonn Greene continued his scoring streak with another 20 to go along with 5 steals.

On a quick turn, WCA headed to a special matchup against highly regarded St. Anne-Belfield (STAB) at Bishop Sullivan High School. Although leading 62-60 with just a few minutes left, their shots ran cold, and STAB collected a 66-62 win from the Eagles.

Finally, last night, WCA faced a Hampton Christian team that gave them all they could handle in the Metro tourney last season, but WCA’s new depth was too much for Hampton Christian, as Mike Duncan scored 20 points and added 8 assists to pace WCA, with even scoring spread throughout the team behind him.

The team returns home Friday night at 7PM to face the Portsmouth Christian Patriots, an up and down team that could prove a pesky opponent.

We’ll see you at the game!!
