Progress has been a key concept throughout this inaugural season for the Eagle Swim Team. And that theme was in full display this past Saturday as the team wrapped their season with another strong finish among some of the largest VISAA swim programs in the state.
The WCA Swim team was founded just this year and immediately scored a major victory in getting Anne Anderson, former William and Mary Head Swim Coach to lead the program. Coach Anderson inherited a small squad of 6 girls and 2 boys, mainly in grades 5 through 8.
Her valuable tutelage was evident Saturday, as the boys group of two swimmers, Forrest Balko and Aaron Copland both swam season bests, with Balko slicing multiple seconds off his 50 yard events.
The girls, absent team points leader Kaitlyn Sullivan, on the road for the Eastern Zone IM Extreme meet, and experienced 6th grader Faith Murray still managed to climb the leaderboard, finishing in 6th place out of 13 teams in the meet. Led by a spirited 6th place finish in the 50 Breast by 6th grader Mary Nice, scoring finishes were also swum by 5th grade phenom Delaney Gibbons, who placed 10th in the 100IM and 50 Back, as well as both relays, with finishes of 4th in the free relay and 7th in the medley relay. Lainey Flanagan nearly broke the 30 second barrier in the 50 Free leg of the medley relay, and Heather Chandley scored in the 50 Back with an 11th place finish with a best time nearly 3 seconds faster than her best set just two weeks ago.
The Team’s season is over, but they are already eager to return next year. The team thanks Coach Anne for an amazing season, and to all the parents who so eagerly assisted at meets and got their swimmers to the pool pre-dawn every day for practice!
