Eagle Swim’s Sullivan Continues Torrid Swim Streak

It was time.
After competing and winning overall titles in many of WCA’s JV meets this and last season, Eagle Swim’s 8th grade record-setter Kaitlyn Sullivan decided she should reach up to varsity level competition to see how she could compete. The result was more astonishing than she could have expected when she swam at the VISAA Division 2 Invitational Saturday afternoon.
She did know looking at past years’ results that she would likely be highly seeded, and that bore out, as she was seeded 2nd in both of her two entered events: the 500 yard Freestyle, and the 100 yard Breaststroke. She would finish in second in the 500 Freestyle to the eventual swimmer of the meet, Bronwyn Keating, a junior at HRA, but rose up to seize the gold medal, first overall in the 100 Breaststroke, fighting off a feisty challenge all the way down the final lap from top seed Nicole Shuford, a HRA senior. She would end up in a four-way tie for second in high points for the meet, and singlehandedly outscored 12 other swim teams in the final girl’s point count, as WCA placed 10th in the meet.
Sullivan, who swims year round with 757swim, has benefited from the additional tutelage all season in early morning practices with past long time William & Mary Tribe Head Swim Coach Anne Anderson, who took on head coaching duties for WCA when their program kicked off last season. Coach Anderson celebrates all her swimmers of all skill levels from true beginners to more adept swimmers, but has really enjoyed watching Sullivan improve.
“Kaitlyn loves to race and to win. She is one of the most competitive swimmers I have coached. She challenges herself to swim tough competition because she knows racing faster people will produce faster times for her,” Coach Anne remarked about Sullivan. “She is the only swimmer to compete at the varsity level this year, the rest of the team is competing at the JV level, but she is ready to compete at the Varsity level. She has 5 Varsity State Championship qualifying times and will be very competitive in her first year competing at the State Meet.”
The VISAA State Championship Meet is on February 17th and 18th in Christiansburg, VA, and Kaitlyn intends to compete in the maximum two events. Swimmers must be at least 8th grade to compete, and the meet is in a Prelims/Finals format. Good luck and swim hard, Kaitlyn!
