WCA Boys and Girls Basketball Both Victorious in Division 3 Quarterfinals, Prepare for Semi-Finals Friday

WCA received a rare treat this year in the VISAA Division 3 Playoffs: back-to-back home games for both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams in this season’s VISAA Division 3 State Championships. Before a near capacity crowd, the #1 Division seeded teams squared off against their first playoff competition in the Wakefield School for the Lady Eagles, and Portsmouth Christian School for the boys.

The Girls squad, as they have started to become known for, started off hot and never looked back. Opening the first quarter with tight defense and streaking fast break offense, they leapt out to a 17-2 lead to open the action. Although Wakefield managed to take measures to counter the press, they were unable to generate any substantial offense push. The Lady Eagles spread the scoring around well, with Aquazia Jones leading all scorers with 18 points. Armani Franklin and Nissa Chlliers scored 12 and 10 respectively, and Kaylee Boger and Patricia Davie added 9 each in the 59-20 statement win.

The Lady Eagles advance to the Semi-Finals, which will be held at Richard Bland College in Petersburg at 6PM Friday, where they will face #5 Richmond Christian, victors over Fredericksburg Academy last night in overtime. The Warriors posted an impressive 23-2 record, with their only two losses coming against Manchester HS in Midlothian, and Amelia Academy, a team that WCA defeated earlier this year by 25 points. Richmond Christian did win two subsequent games over Amelia however, with the most recent a 12 point victory in their Conference final game.

The Boys team took the court following the ladies and faced familiar Portsmouth Christian from the Metro Conference. Similar to the Ladies’ game, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, and never looked back. The Patriots made several attempts to close the gap, but just couldn’t seem to get their shots to fall, as WCA increased their lead and eventually punched their ticket to the State Semi’s 72-40. Scoring was concentrated on our top two season scoring threats, Cle’Von Greene and Xavier Green, who had 24 and 18 points respectively.

The Eagles now move on to face another Patriots team, a resurgent Virginia Academy squad, which advanced after defeating higher seed Life Christian by a similar margin to WCA’s victory over Life earlier this season. These Patriots have two big men on their roster at 6’10”, and will represent a size challenge for the Eagles.

The Boy’s semi-final game will be 12 noon on Friday, March 4th, and high school students interested in attending the game can be dismissed from the game, proivided they meet certain conditions. To see the requirements for the early dismissal, click here.

We look forward to seeing the Big Blue Crew in Full effect at the game tomorrow!
