Our Williamsburg Christian Academy Boy’s Basketball teams opened their seasons these past two weeks, winning their home opener, and getting solid tests in scrimmage and exhibition game action.
Home Opener vs. Life Christian Academy (JV)
Though seemingly with an upper hand in this game, the Eagles of Life Christian gave our Eagles a solid run for our money. In the end the solid all around play from our starters and bench players made the difference as the JV team pulled away, 81-63.
Home Opener vs. Life Christian Academy (Varsity)
There are really good games to start the season, and there are GREAT games to start the season. Those of you who missed out on this instant classic missed a game that featured close to 10 lead changes, a 10 point margin headed into the last quarter, only to watch the Life Christian squad pull even with 7 seconds left. Their valiant efforts were in vain, however, as a tip-in by sophomore Dexter Radcliffe sealed the win with 0.7 seconds remaining. Cle’von Greene led all scorers with 22 points, followed by twin efforts of 13 points by twin brothers Rashawn and Dashawn Cook. One notable area for improvement was free throw shooting, as the Eagles went just over 50% from the charity stripe.
Scrimmage vs. Trinity Episcopal (Junior Varsity & Varsity)
Trinity Episcopal defeated WCA last season, and was the sixth seed in the VISAA Division 1 Tournament last Spring. For the most part their starters have all returned this season, making for a substantial test for a younger WCA team. Our Eagles battled hard, but the depth and height of TES was substantial. Though official score was not kept, the Titans controlled most of the game. The game was an excellent reminder to all our players how hard they will need to work to become a top team this season. The Titan’s Junior Varsity team benefits from the number of returning starters at TES as well. The WCA JV team had several successful runs, but again, the depth of the Titan’s bench made the going rough.
Rotary Jamboree
The Rotary Invitational Basketball Jamboree was outstanding this year, with many of our local squads truly becoming excellent ball clubs. The tournament included local teams Jamestown, Warhill and Lafayette, as well as nearby Tabb and West Point, and visiting Division 1 teams Cape Henry Collegiate and Bishop Sullivan from Virginia Beach. WCA drew Tabb in the first game, who had taken care of West Point in their opener. WCA controlled most of the contest, but some trouble with ball security kept the Tigers in it. WCA was able to pull away late on the strength of a run of remarkable plays by Rashawn Cook and the three point shooting of brother Dashawn.
In the second contest, WCA took on our nearest High School in Warhill. Although Warhill has struggled in recent years as they have built their squad, they were excellent competition for WCA on Friday. Surges by WCA were consistently answered by runs by Warhill. And although WCA grabbed an 8 point lead with just a few minutes to go, Warhill again put on pressure and managed to collect a steal and layup at the buzzer, leaving WCA with a 1 point victory.
The JV and Varsity teams host Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Thursday, with games at 5:30PM and 7PM respectively…see you in the stands!!
