Upon founding of the WCA Eagle swim team, the team made the decision that they would focus on development in its first two seasons, with participation in only junior varsity meets. Last year the team only had one upperclassman, with the remainder of the swimmers in 8th grade or younger. Their performance this season, and this past Friday night’s very competitive JV invitational at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, has required the team to advance the timetable to varsity competition.
With only 5 female swimmers on the roster, the WCA girls team tied for 5th overall with big program St. Anne’s-Belfield. Their points also nearly surpassed the point total of swimming giant Collegiate School as well. The boys, with just 4 swimmers, two of which are in 5th grade, placed 10th.
The scoring was led by standout Kaitlyn Sullivan, who placed 1st overall in both of her events, with personal bests in the 50 yard Butterfly and 50 yard Breaststroke. Sullivan also posted a scorching 25.47 seconds in her leg of the 200 Freestyle relay, which placed 3rd. Just behind her in the scoring list was a teammate of that relay, Lainey Flanagan, who was just out-touched to take 2nd in the 50Y Freestyle and 5th in the 100Y Freestyle. Sixth Grader Delaney Gibbons secured a 2nd place finish in the 50Y Backstroke and 6th place in the 100Y Individual Medley (IM), and Mary Nice locked down fourth in the 50Y Breaststroke, and was 21st in the 100Y IM. That group of four also placed 3rd in the 200yard medley relay. The newcomer to the bunch, Cheyenne Silverio, logged best times in both her 50Y Freestyle and 50Y Breastroke events.
The boys managed to find their way into the points as well. Aaron Copland went sub-30 in the 50 Freestyle for the first time in his Eagle Swim career, placing 8th and added a 10th in the 100Y Freestyle. Newcomer Zane Eckols chipped in with an 8th in the 50Y Backstroke, and 11th place in the 50Y Freestyle. Even 5th grader. Youngsters Nathan Watson and Connor Sullivan had solid swims for the Eagles as well.
The team has a quick turnaround as they head down to Norfolk on Saturday the 21st for the Norfolk Academy JV Invitational.
