The Williamsburg Christian Academy Boys basketball Team entered a pivotal stretch last week: Three games versus three Metro Conference foes, with the ability to put a headlock on their second METRO conference regular season title in two years. And they seized the opportunity, winning all three.
WCA faced off against Hampton Christian Academy Monday for the school’s homecoming celebration, and then went on the road Wednesday and Friday to challenge Broadwater Academy and Isle of Wight Academy.
Definitely a game that was circled on the calendar, WCA hosted HCA on Homecoming night, and were buoyed by a larger than usual crowd on a Monday game night, following the PTL Homecoming Tailgate. Coach Tony Rutland has Hampton Christian playing excellent basketball this season, but due to some eligibility oversights, they have lost two of their marquis players. Despite the weakened roster, HCA played a spirited game. The Warriors fell behind 20-7 in the first quarter, and just couldn’t recover from that deficit, as WCA applied consistent defensive pressure and limited their turnovers. HCA was successful in reducing the impact of Cle’von Greene, who had 16 points (5 from the foul line), but that pressure opened up RaShawn and DaShawn Cook, who had 20 points and 14 points respectively.
The very next night, WCA made to long sojourn to Exmore, VA on the DelMarVa peninsula to meet the Vikings of Broadwater Academy. Fortunately the Vikings are not as potent an opponent as HCA for the back-to-back night games stint. Captain Cle’Von Greene cheered from the bench as Coach Brown sought to give the star a night to recuperate. The remaining starters and reserves got the job done, opening a staggering 29-8 first quarter lead en route to a 80-41 victory. DaShawn Cook led all scorers with 24 points on an astonishing 10 of 11 from the field.
To wrap up the week, WCA headed across the James to tangle with Isle of Wight Academy in Smithfield. The Chargers hung tough in the first half of this one, with the halftime score just a two point advantage for WCA. The Eagles exploded for 30 points in the third quarter, however, to put the game out of reach. Sophomore big man Chester Makoi led all scorers with 18 points to accompany 7 rebounds.
With those three wins, WCA gained a magic number of 1 to clinch the Metro Conference regular season title. The Eagles bring Broadwater Academy back to Williamsburg for a rematch tonight that, if won, will clinch the title. Please join us tonight for what hopefully will be a celebration of our second consecutive METRO crown!
