VARSITY SOCCER STAYS UNDEFEATED WITH PAIR OF NON-CONFERENCE WINS

WCA Varsity Soccer continued its incredible season this week with a pair of victories over non-conference opponents. The Eagles are still undefeated with a mark of 5 wins and 1 tie to no losses.

Eagles Too Much For Grove Christian

On Monday, the squad faced off against Grove Christian School of Richmond, and came away with one of their biggest wins of the season, winning 8-0. In the 15th minute, off an assist by Peter Rodenberg, Jalen Vaughan started the scoring with a screamer under the crossbar that was too hot for the Grove keeper to handle. Peter Rodenberg received the ball from Evan Henley and put the Eagles up 2 with a hard volley that the keeper mishandled. Jalen Vaughan capped the 1st half scoring at 3 goals with an assist from Evan Henley right before halftime.

Cle’von Greene started the second half off with a bang as he fought off defenders and put the Eagles ahead by 4 from an assist by Jalen Vaughan in the 55th minute. Jalen completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 65th minute. He would continue his heroics with a fourth and final goal on a crossing assist from Cameron de la Garza . DaShawn Cook would get into the act after pushing up from his central back position and touching the ball in from an another assist from de la Garza.
Robert Carter got into the scoring column in the 78th minute to shut the gate on the scoring at 8-0 for the Eagles.
The Eagles were paced by the stellar defensive play of Evan Henley and Jahvon Noray. DaShawn Cook shone as usual from his center back position.

WCA Fends Off Gateway With a Few Favorable Bounces

The very next day, the Eagles played host to visiting Gateway Christian of Virginia Beach. It was clear there would be no repeat of the previous day’s easy win, as Gateway had a strong plan and excellent ball handlers. The Eagles started the scoring with a goal that trickled into the net after a glancing save off a left-footer by Cle’von Greene. The game stayed at 1-0 through the rest of the first half with both teams having several solid chances to score broken up by great goaltending play.

The second half saw more of the same until Jalen Vaughn fired a long-range shot, which the Gateway keeper mishandled. The ball bounced past him at the corner of the net to make the score 2-0, to the delight of the large tailgate crowd on hand.  RaShawn Cook contributed the third goal with an impressive display of speed and body positioning to split defenders and notch the last goal. Gateway scored one consolation goal near the end of time, the Eagles 3-1 winners going away.

WCA returns to Metro action next week as we travel to Portsmouth on Tuesday, facing off against the Portsmouth Christian School Patriots, who we edged out for a 4-3 win in the final minutes at home.
