Carson Henley is a man of many talents. The WCA Junior has been a member of the WCA Tennis team, the Tech Team, and was a standout performer in the first ever WCA Night at the Improv. But Carson’s true passion lies in music. He has performed for WCA as a member of Praise Band, and in his free time on the weekend, he performs as a member of the Water’s Edge Church worship team. He plays not just one, but two instruments, keyboards and drums, alongside adult musicians in front of a full auditorium of congregants.
We caught up with Carson and asked him a few questions about this experience and about life at WCA. Here were his responses:
When did you start playing the drums, and when did you join the church band?
My dad was always showing me how to play the drums when I was little but I started playing when I joined WCA in the 6th grade and played in the Praise Band. I started playing the keyboard for the church band when I was a freshman. Now I play both for the church every Sunday rotating between the two based on needs.
What part of participating in that group do you enjoy the most?
I love performing on stage but more importantly, I love using my talents to honor and praise God.
How much time do you spend with the group preparing to perform on Sundays?
We practice every week together on Thursday evenings and depending on the setlist I spend additional time practicing on my own to prepare for Sunday mornings.
What benefits do you feel you have obtained from playing with the group and performing at church?
I have become a much better musician and I have a new appreciation and perspective on worship. It’s an honor to help people grow closer to God through worship.
As a junior, you have to be looking at colleges pretty hard right now, where are hoping to apply and attend as far as colleges go?
Probably between UVA, George Mason, and James Madison University.
Do you see music factoring into your career plans or major?
I’d say music is primarily a hobby, I’m looking to get into the Sciences as a career, so far I really like Chemistry and the work I’ve been doing in AP Chemistry.
If you’d like to see Carson in action, he performs on the worship team almost every Sunday at 11:00AM with WEC, which meets at Regal Cinemas in Williamsburg, visit their website for more information.
Do you have a WCA student doing great things in the community? Send us a note about it at info@williamsburgchristian.org and they could be the next Student in the Spotlight!
