Varsity Boys Eagle Basketball Takes Final Two Contests and #1 Seed Into Metro Tourney
The Boys Basketball Team Recorded a perfect 16-0 Metro Conference Record and will take their number one seed into the Metro Tournament this weekend, winning two home games against Isle of Wight and Hampton Christian on back to back nights.
Thursday’s Isle of Wight game proved to be more challenging than it appeared in the opening quarter. WCA jumped out to a 19-6 lead, but the Chargers combined some excellent ball movement with stronger defense to keep the lead right there through the second and third quarters. The Eagles finally broke through and put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 19-10 advantage to seal it. Cle’von Greene led all scorers with 17 points, backed up by Mike Duncan and Andre Brown who had 13 a piece.
The following night’s game was Senior Night, and the all-senior starting lineup of Andre Brown, Austin Ortiz, Ryan Flanagan, Mike Duncan and Xavier Green were honored with their parents prior to the tip. Mike Duncan entered the game needing only 35 points to reach the 1,000 point mark, and almost reached the plateau in this game as he rang up 31 points on Hampton Christian. The Warriors kept the game relatively close all the way through until a statement alley-oop dunk by Cle’von Greene ignited the offense, who then went on to score 35 points in the 4th Quarter, most by Duncan, to win comfortably 81-52. Rashawn Cook added 15 with Xavier Green contributing 12 points to go with 18 rebounds.
The team will face an opponent TBD on Thursday, February 21st at Portsmouth Christian School. Here is the full tourney schedule:
QUARTERFINAL: Thurs Feb 24 WCA vs. TBD @ 3:45 Portsmouth Christian
SEMI-FINALS: Fri Feb 25 WCA vs. TBD @ 6PM Portsmouth Christian (if win)
FINALS: Sat Feb 26th WCA vs. TBD @ 7:30 Portsmouth Christian (if win)
