Our students may be off from school this summer, but they are still doing great things and serving as incredible ambassadors for WCA in summer activities….here’s a glance at what just some of our students have been up to this summer:
WCA Senior Ashley Nice recently contributed FORTY THREE hats that she knitted herself to Handmade for the Homeless project this summer, sponsored by the Flying Needles Yarn Store! Ashley was introduced to the store by her mother, Cristi, who also frequents there. She learned how to knit from her aunt, but Ashley took up knitting more regularly recently to help her cope with chronic anxiety that she suffers from. “When I gave my friends and family hats they would be happy. I like to make people happy so I decided to give my hats to people who might not have as much to make them happy,” said Nice regarding her decision to participate in the program. WCA’s personalized learning program permits students like Ashley with barriers to learning such as anxiety the opportunity to mitigate its impact by knitting hats in class. She usually knits two hats a week on average, both at school and at home. All of the donated items will go to Williamsburg’s House of Mercy!
WCA 8th grader Keith Cardenas’ Club Champions League (CCL) team from Virginia Legacy U13 team played in the Virginia State Cup. The State Cup is a single elimination tournament with teams in his age group from the entire State of Virginia. The tournament takes several weeks and was played on the same weekends that his regular season games are played! Virginia Legacy advanced to the final game and beat McClean 4-0 to win the Virginia State Cup for 2018 for the age group U13 (13 and under years of age). This is only the second team in Virginia Legacy history to win the State Cup and they are also the youngest team in club history to do so. The team advanced to play in the East Coast Reginal Championship that consisted of teams from 14 States. Cardenas’ team won 1 game and lost 2 games in the Regionals. Keith scored a great goal from the top of the penalty box against the state championship team from Pennsylvania. Keith will compete for WCA’s Varsity soccer squad this fall.
WCA sophomore Eagle Swim team member Kaitlyn Sullivan shattered three Meet Records in the Virginia Peninsula Swim Union (VPSU) Championship Meet swimming for her neighborhood, Stonehouse. The VPSU consists of 20 neighborhood and membership pools throughout Williamsburg.
Kaitlyn shattered the meet records in the 13-14 100 Meter Individual Medley (IM), 50 meter Freestyle, and 50 meter Breaststroke races. The records for both the 100 meter IM and 50 meter Breast had stood for 13 and 14 years respectively, while the freestyle record was set in 2012.
8th grader Delaney Gibbons was also a big winner, as she took first in the 13-14 50 meter Backstroke, as well as 4th in the 50 meter Butterfly and 5th in the 100IM, at just 13. Delaney swims for the Ford’s Colony Killer Whales, and should be a favorite to sweep her events next year.
