WCA Boys Basketball Makes Statement in First Game Over Life Christian Academy

WCA Starts Season With Big Win
Any doubts as to whether WCA will be in the state basketball title picture again this year were extinguished in their season opener, as they handled a Life Christian Academy, a team that had actually improved from a year ago, 89-65.
The roster for the LCA Eagles is not available online, so the makeup of their roster was a mystery heading into the game. During warmups, there was definitely some concern, as LCA had two big men at 6’5″ or better, which is not an area of strength for WCA. But as the commonly used sports adage goes, ‘There is no substitute for speed’. WCA’s guard trio of Da’Shawn and Ra’Shawn Cook, as well as reigning VISAA D3 Player of the Year and Radford University commit Cle’von Greene combined a pestilent defense and slashing moves to the basket to open up the three-point shot and quickly jump out to an 18-1 lead late in the first quarter. Life Christian would never recover from the slow shooting start, trailing 25-8 at the end of the first quarter, and 46-28 at the half, and could never establish the type of post presence that their height should have allowed them to exploit.
Da’Shawn Cook’s 29 points led the way for the defending state champs, with 29 points, followed closely by Greene with 26 points to accompany 11 rebounds. Ra’Shawn Cook ran the point most of the night, and finished with 11 points and 10 assists.
If there was one area of concern in the opening performance, it was certainly free throws, as the team shot a combined 58% from the charity stripe. Free throws have almost certainly been an area of emphasis in practice since for new Coach Kenya Williams, who picked up his first win as head basketball coach at WCA.
WCA Wins Both Exhibitions in Rotary Jamboree
Following the opening night win, WCA played host to the Rotary Jamboree Basketball tournament. Our boys team’s draw for the event was originally Great Bridge Christian, who unfortunately had to withdraw and was replaced by Denbigh High school, and Norfolk Collegiate. The event games were just 3 periods instead of 4 quarters, exhibition format. WCA triumphed in both games, defeating Denbigh 46-31, and Norfolk Collegiate 43-41. For the most part, the team had fun with these games, attempting a number of dunks (not always successful) and playing relatively loose.
The season starts in earnest tonight, November 28th, as all teams travel to Atlantic Shores Christian School in Chesapeake to take on our arch rival Seahawks in the first Metro Conference basketball action of the year.
