The Eagles Soccer season wrapped up just over a week ago, and what a journey it was. From humble beginnings as a team without a great deal of substantial year-round soccer experience, Coach Jae Kim and this team capitalized on raw athleticism of several key contributors, and nearly came away as Metro Champions.

In a year with new school activities policies in place which include as many athletic, art and club offerings as students wish to perform all under one set fee, the boys soccer team had a decidedly different composition to it. The additions of several members of the 2017 State Championship Basketball team were certainly a big boost to the team, and ultimately would result in one of them, Cle’von Greene, being named to the All-Metro first team.

The team marched into hostile territory at Atlantic Shores in the semi-final Metro tourney game as the visiting third seed. In this match-up with Shores the winner would move on to the Metro Conference Championship game on Saturday. Having lost to Shores earlier in the year, the Eagles were ready to avenge that loss.  It was apparent from the get-go that WCA had come on a mission. Players were peskily defending opposing players like gnats, and 15 minutes into the game, Jalen Vaughan struck on a beautifully placed free kick from 30 yards out into the upper left corner millimeters over the lanky reach of an outstretched Atlantic Shores keeper. The Eagles had landed the first blow and  Atlantic Shores would never recover as Cle’von Greene would put in an insurance goal, in the second half, out of the reach of a diving Shores goalie into the bottom-left corner of the net, followed up by a miscue by the Shores goalie as a shot by Jalen Vaughan slipped through the grasp of the Shores goalie and landed at his feet. In the ensuing scramble, the ball dribbled over the line , sealing the game for WCA.

The Metro Championship game against Portsmouth Christian lived up to the past two games between the two, which they split. Defense would rule out in this contest, with no scoring at all in the first half, and a lone goal by PCS deciding the game, 1-0. Although coming out in defeat, a moral victory was concretely evident, as not many pegged the team as one that would be a mere one goal away from a Metro Championship.

The team finished 8-2-1 on the season, with both Cle’Von Greene and Jalen Vaughan earning All-Metro nods. All parents of the team and other WCA community members are welcome to join us at the Fall Athletics Awards Banquet on November 14th at 6PM.
