The Williamsburg Christian Academy Basketball varsity and junior varsity boys teams swept their contests this last week, as they downed Portsmouth Christian and Denbigh Baptist in Metro Conference Play, and Christ Chapel Academy on Saturday in a neutral site showcase game at Atlantic Shores Christian School.
One of the challenging aspects of high school basketball is the inability to get good looks at teams, especially in the Metro Conference of private schools, where rosters can change dramatically from one year to another. Given that dynamic, games in the beginning of the season are a question mark, without the ability to look at record versus similar competition, or see the other team in action. Portsmouth Christian was our opponent last season in the Metro semi-finals, but was not a substantial challenge in that contest. Last Tuesday’s contest looked to have the same look, but a PCS team with some excellent shot makers and good ball distribution made the game closer than many would have expected based on last season’s playoff game. WCA went up by as much as 20 at one point early in the third, primarily on the strength of takeaways, and improving post play from big man Chester Makoi (ultimately named Player of the Game) but a spurt of PCS full court press combined with red hot shooting pulled the Patriots to within 6 at one point in the fourth. The Eagles buckled down on D and were able to break the press, however, to regain momentum and come away with a 79-58 win.
The JV team was equally successful in defeating a scrappy PCS JV team, 52-45, a game which PCS actually led at the half.
Friday night, the varsity team traveled down to Denbigh Baptist School, and were easy winners 85-26, with reserves playing much of the game and getting valuable experience in varsity playing time. Senior Danny Kean lead the team against Denbigh, and scored 21 points. Dexter Radcliffe tallied 20, and Kivinie Johnson added 13.
On a quick turnaround, the team bused down to Chesapeake to a showcase event at Atlantic Shores Christian School the next morning to take on 2015-2016 VISAA D3 Playoff Semi-finalist Christ Chapel Academy, a team that had bumped the 2014-2015 Eagles out of the State Tourney Semi-finals. The team was able to best the Lions in this go around 76-57, with DaShawn Cook at the center of the victory. DaShawn was named player of the game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Cle’Von Greene led all scorers with 20 points and Chester Makoi chipped in 18 in a balanced attack.
The team prepares for a monumental test this weekend as it takes on Division 2 foes Atlantic Shores Christian and Steward School on Friday and Saturday at 7PM and 6PM respectfully. The JV squads will play 90 minutes earlier each day. Come out and support the team this weekend, the games should be exciting!!
