The senior group at WCA apparently has absolutely no intention of not repeating as VISAA D3 champions, as evidenced by their substantial victory over Atlantic Shores Christian, 90-65 on the Seahawks’ home court. Atlantic Shores Christian School, a VISAA Division 2 school based on school size, is traditionally WCA’s fiercest rival and closest competitor in the METRO Conference. Again, the presence of two players over 6’8″ on the Shores roster was not a factor that the Seahawks could exploit. The triple threat once again of Cle’von Greene, Da’Shawn Cook and Ra’Shawn Cook dealt the bulk of the scoring damage.  Greene put up 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.  Da’Shawn Cook dropped 23 points with 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals, and Ra’Shawn Cook tallied 15 points, 6 rebounds,6 assists, and 5 steals. Many buckets came as a result of the trio’s quick hands and forced errors from the Eagles’ tenacious defense.

The win represents the second over two of WCA’s highest quality opponents in the 2016-2017 season, as WCA opened its season with a high flying showtime win over Life Christian Academy 89-65, prior to Thanksgiving.  In that game, the team also faced off against a larger line-up that could never fully use its size due to the Eagles’ lightning-quick guard play and skillful ballhandling, in the vein of the Golden State Warriors basketball guard-centered model.

The Eagles will next face Denbigh Baptist Christian School. Winless through two starts this season, Denbigh Baptist should not pose a substantial challenge to this seasoned WCA squad, and we will likely see a great deal of play from the bench and the opportunity to give the starters some rest, which is essential to growing the team and preparing for the rigors of the long season. Game action starts at 7PM on Thursday night.

JV Boys Win over Atlantic Shores on Strength of Vaughan’s Huge Night

Jalen Vaughan is often mistaken for an upperclassman, due to his sizable frame. Just a sophomore, Vaughan is quickly learning how to utilize his size for an advantage in games. In just their third game this season, he looks in mid-season form, scoring a stunning 33 points, over half the teams total, in a 64-46 win over Atlantic Shores’ JV team. Ethan Conrad contributed 10 points and Connor Simmons added 9. They next face the Richmond Spirit club team on Thursday at 5:30PM.

JV Girls Squad Falls to Atlantic Shores

At the beginning of this season, it was unknown whether the Eagles would be able to field a basketball team. The team was successfully able to gather enough players to have a workable squad. The team includes a number of younger middle school players, in the continuation of the rebuilding of the girls program. The team lost 49-36, a respectable margin for a group with many still learning the sport. The team will face off against club team the Richmond Spirit on Friday in Henrico at 6PM Friday.
