Williamsburg Christian Names Williams as New Men’s Basketball Coach

After an extensive search process, Williamsburg Christian Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Kenya Williams as their new Men’s Basketball Coach starting in the 2017-2018 season. Williams comes to WCA after several years as a junior varsity head coach at both Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Windsor High School, as well as additional coaching in the Parks and Recreation system in Suffolk.

Athletic Director Kraig Ware explained why Williams was the consensus choice by leadership, “The hiring of our Men’s Varsity Head Basketball Coach was a huge undertaking for our leadership team.  As we focus to grow our entire athletic program to the next level, we were seeking a person that was well rounded and had a strong & proven track record in three areas in order of importance: character development, academic excellence, and a passion, knowledge, and a love for coaching and developing rising stars in the game of basketball. Kenya was the candidate we interviewed who was the clear choice based on those criteria.  Without a doubt, our basketball program at WCA has always been very competitive and known regionally as the team to beat.  We are going to continue to build our basketball program as we focus on a coaching staff that can take all of our athletic programs to the national stage.”

Williams certainly has the tools to immediately return the 2016-2017 VISAA Division 3 State Champions to the title game. The varsity squad, led by Radford commit Cle’Von Greene, returns four starters from their title team in Greene, speedy twin Seniors DaShawn and RaShawn Cook, as well as junior forward Dexter Radcliffe, who was a pivotal performer in the final four. The team recently added guard Malachi Banks from Summit Christian Academy and brings up several sophomores and juniors with substantial playing experience at the varsity level.

“What attracted me to WCA was the brotherhood the current players have for each other and the rich basketball history here. I read Cle’von (Greene)’s twitter account before applying and he explained that he came back another season to win another championship with his brothers, which speaks volumes about his love for his teammates as well as the school.  WCA also does a great job of putting athletes in a position to succeed not only in sports, but in education as well,” Williams explained when asked what drew him to apply for the Coaching position.”I plan on bringing my resources and basketball experience to WCA by helping our senior athletes transition and obtain scholarships to collegiate programs, and developing the young guys to become student-athletes, so they can move on to the next level in sports or education. When you factor in that my family and I wanted the best education for our daughter when she becomes a kindergartener, WCA was a perfect fit. My wife and I wanted to be around a community where we could live, work, and play. We look forward to meeting other parents and the rest of the staff of the school.”

Williams grew up in nearby Hopewell, and was a 4-year letterman and eventual co-captain for their varsity high school basketball team, helping that team to a state semi-final appearance. He continued his basketball career collegiately at Frederick Community College, where he earned an Associate’s degree before continuing for a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Old Dominion University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. He would use his Bachelor’s degree immediately upon graduation, becoming a Nuclear Reactor Services engineer at Huntington Ingalls Industries, and now puts his Master’s in Business Administration to good work as the owner of his own auto detailing business, iShine for You in Williamsburg.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Kenya to the WCA family,” expressed Head of School Dr. David Breslin,”I was immediately impressed with his spiritual maturity and desire to not only continue the tradition of playing for championships on the court, but also his desire to grow young men into positive leaders.”

Williamsburg Christian is tentatively scheduled to open their 2017-2018 campaign at home versus Life Christian Academy.
